TORNER DE SEMIR

(1938) - Spanish artist

Torner was born in 1938. His imagination, his huge knowledge of History of Art, together with his incomparable technique that has been developed along the years, give to his works a stamp of particular original aesthetic.

He was born in a small walled village with lots of Middle Age vestiges, which has influenced him a lot. We could also feel the Romantic and Baroque influence of the figures he paints, as well as his admiration for one of the XVII century Masters, Diego Velazquez, and more precisely for what concerns the "Meninas".

The Torner work is a mixture of famous figures with gorgeous mixed media abstract backgrounds including special pigments, collages of fabric, magazines, coins or other items of today, which make it look eternally contemporary and modern.

After his training at the "Sant Jordi" Art School in Barcelona, then at the "Sant Fernando" Art School in Madrid, he went travelling around Paris, Florence, Rome and Venice, in order to enjoy the Masterpieces of the History of Art.
He went observing accurately the techniques used by the Classical Masters, which inspired him a lot in his work and render a final fresh and elegant result.

Such a mixture of modern and ancient has been recognized by lots of established Institutions, and in 2003 for example, the Spanish Royal Office of Money and Stamps has issued a series stamps representing one of the Torner works, in commemoration of the XXV Anniversary of the Spanish Constitution.
In the meantime, the Royal Money Museum in Madrid has organized an exhibition of his works.

The Torner works have been exhibited in a large number of European cities, such as Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Barcelona, Strasburg, St Paul de Vence, Valencia, Clermont-Ferrand, Sevilla, etc...
